Phillips de Pury & Company is delighted to announce our forthcoming curated exhibition on the renowned Rorschach theme. Staged in our galleries at Park Avenue, the exhibition will be on view for the summer months and span 5 decades - including top works from Andy Warhol to present day.
In 1921 the Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach published Psychodiagnostik in which he unveiled his projective personality assessment vernacularly known as the "Inkblot Test". Since then, the Rorschach test has infiltrated popular culture as a cryptic emblem portrayed as capable of inveigling the subconscious. While its popularity has arguably diminished its efficacy, artists have continually adopted its signature symmetrical stylings as a symbol of the subconscious. Even when its hallmark attributes are absent, artists weave subliminal narratives into their works in order to induce the same projective results as Rorschach's original test. To that end, the exhibition explores not only the imagery of the famed test but the test itself through the curation of a modern-day "Rorschach test".
